Nurse scheduling that explains every decision

DashPoint Analytics is building a nurse scheduling tool that works out how many staff each shift needs, checks certifications, shares unpopular shifts fairly, and explains every decision in plain English.

The problem

Nurse managers in nursing homes and hospitals build 4 to 6 week schedules by hand. They juggle how many patients there are and how sick they are, required staffing levels, certifications, rest rules and fairness, and the same people end up covering the weekends, nights and holidays nobody wants.

What we built

A scheduling tool that works out how many staff each shift needs from the number of patients and how much care they need. In under a second it tells you whether the schedule can be covered at all, then offers several options, best first. It checks each certification against each shift date, so one that expires partway through is caught. Hard shifts are shared fairly across permanent staff over a full year. Every number comes with a plain explanation, the same inputs always give the same schedule, and no patient information is ever used.

Outcome

The scheduling engine is finished and checked by about 1,190 automated tests, and the app around it is being built. When a schedule cannot be fully covered, managers see the reason with the arithmetic behind it, for example how many shifts need a credential that only one available person holds.
